How to choose proper rotary kiln according to customers´requirement?

Before getting the specifications of rotary kiln, we must master the following technical data and material character : type of materials, status of materials (especially moisture content), feeding method, demand for processing materials(temperature, physical and chemical changes), the rotary kiln capacity and capacity variation range of requirement, the location of feeding (tail or central), type of fuel and energy consumption. We need to consider the following rotary kiln parameters: diameter (inner diameter), length, inclination,rotate speed,capacity,heat consumption and required transmission power.

Rotary kiln belongs to pyroprocessing equipment for treating loose pulp material. It is featured with big capacity, high degree of mechanization, simple operation and maintenance. It fits for multiple industrial material to sintering, roasting, volatilizing, burning, liquating, etc. So it is widely adopted for non-ferrous metallurgy, ferrous metallurgy, refractory material, cement, chemical engineering and papermaking, and other industrial sector.

working principle of rotary kiln

Rotary kiln is large scale rotary drum equipment, small angle slanting installation, rotation in low speed. When it running, the raw material is feed to the kiln by the high-end (also called as kiln tail) ; the fuel jet from the low-end (also called kiln head), the exhaust gas discharges from the high-end; as the rotation of the roatry kiln drum, the material moves along the axial at same time making along the circumferential roll; On the process of the material movement, it is heated by the countercurrent flow heat exchange with hot air, going through physical and chemical changes, becoming the finished product and discharging from the low-end.

The structure of the rotary kiln

 Seen from the mechanical structure of the rotary kiln, which is composed by kiln drum and liners, rolling ring, supporting device, driving device, kiln head cap, burner, kiln tail cap, feeding device, control system. Please refer to picture and sketch below.

     

Rotary kiln drum and liners

The rotary kiln drum is rolled by steel plate, welding by parts and parts, which is one of the main parts of the rotary kiln. Becuse of the length of the kiln drum, it is supported by 2~9 grades. According to the changing process of material of temprature, the inner drum is devided into 5 working zones: drying zone, preheating zone, disintegrating zone, reaction zone (or firing zone), cooling zone. The length and species of every working zone depends on chemical reaction and pyroprocessing method. The material buring temprature in the kiln drum could be more than 1459℃. In order to protect the kiln drum and reduce thermolysis, the kiln liners is constructed by fireproofing material (for example clay brick or alumina brick) inner kiln drum.  

Rolling ring

Rolling ring is a large hard rim, which is suited on the rotary kiln cylinder. The thousands of rotary parts load from rotary kiln cylinder, kiln liner and materials will apply to support roller through the tyres, so the each tyre will transmit hundreds of load, the same time the weight of each tyre is zbout dozens of tons.

   

Support device

Under each tyre, there is a set of support device, including a pair of rollers, shaft, roller bearing and bed plate, to support parts of rotary kiln weight. The tyre bear on the roller, driven by the friction of roller rotation. The roller is the most easily damaged parts in the support device, because the roller not only to guarantee the cylinder rotating, but also it bear heavy load. On one or several support device equipped with the thrust , to restrict and control the axial moving of rotary parts.

Transmission device

 The rotary transmission device consists main motor, reducer and gears. The bid gears are fixed on the rotary kiln with spring. The transmission system diagram as follow:

 

The characteristics of transmission is big ratio, the generally speed is about 1.5—2.5 r/min, not more than 3 r/min 

Kiln hood

The Kiln hood is the intermediates connecting the kiln head and next process equipment (such as cooler). The burner and burning air are covered into kiln through it.

Burner

The heating equipment of rotary kiln is burner, there are different burners according to the different fuel (such as coal injection pipe, oil gun gas nozzle). The most burners cover into the kiln cylinder through kiln hood. The materials heated by flame radiation to the required temperature. Usually the fuel of rotary kiln are coal powder, coal gas, CNG and heavy oil. Also you can choose others according to technology requirement, local resources and supply situations. 

Cold kiln hood

Cold kiln hood is in the tail end of rotary kiln, it is the intermediates connecting kin tail, materials pretreatment equipment and gas pretreatment equipment. The exhaust gas discharged from cold kiln hood, then get into flue and dust collecting system. Materials feed into the tail of rotary kiln by the feeder equipment, for the rotary kiln with a preheater; the materials feed into rotary tail after disposed by preheater. Between the stillness cold kiln hood and rotary cylinder there is sealing device (rotary kiln sealing). 

Feeder device

Feeder device is the accessory equipment of rotary kiln which is chose according to the form of materials. Dry powder and block material by spiral feeding or through a chute and slip. A class of materials in the form of filter cake wet aluminum hydroxide, can feed into rotary kiln with plate feeder or screw feeder. Demand for feeder system is steady, uniform and easily to control in order to cooperate to the operation of rotary kiln. 

Control system

A good system only needs one staff to control every machine, almost no need human intervention during the running time. There are two kind of rotary kiln automatic systems, one is electrical logic control system and the other is instrument adjusting circuit. Electrical logic control system include the preheater feeder system, cloth bag dusting system, preheat machine transmission system, and finished goods out of the system; Instrument adjusting circuit mainly includes the gas flow control loop, preheater pressure regulation of air flow control loop, loop, kiln head pressure regulating circuit, preheater speed setting, rotary kiln speed, cooling machine speed setting, etc. Rotary kiln temperature control system adopts advanced distributed computer control system. It is composed of  upper machine and lower machine and field bus. SPC takes charge in the mathematical model calculation and get the point temperature set; DDC takes charge in the temperature control, pressure control, atmosphere control, etc. It Can make the rotary kiln in a stable temperature and combustion conditions required.
